Making maps with COMO

You will need at least two programs for COMO. For the actual mapmaking program (the editor), you can choose between two programs. Then when you saved your map you want to render it to get the final map (an image file) which you can print.

Edit a map

Choose an editor you want to use for making your map. There are currently two which have some adaptations for orienteering:

  • JOSM has some advanced functions and many plugins
  • Merkaartor looks more close to the final map. Someone used to OCAD might be more comfortable with this one.

I recommend test both programs to see what suits you best. Read more instructions on how to use the programs on their respectively wiki pages.

The good thing with COMO is that if you work together with someone else, you can use different editors and still open a map made with the other editor. For more information about collaboration possibilities, see its section below.

Render your map

After a while of editing you probably want to see how your map will look. You then need to render it. Save your map as an .osm-file and then follow the instructions on the rendering page. You will get an svg image file which you can print or convert to other image formats.
