Welcome to the COMO project

COMO is a project devoted to make a  free system for making  orienteering maps. This is important for mainly two reasons; Cartographic beginners can try the art of map-making without having to buy an expensive software. Secondly, today's leading map-making software lacks many features e.g being able to making maps cooperatively in a group. Anyone can make the changes they need to an open software, which is not possible for an proprietary ditto.

COMO is not a single program, but a collection of standards and programs that together make mapping easy and effective. It is very good for collaborating in a group to make an map. The basis for COMO is  OpenStreetMap (OSM), a free editable map of the whole world (comparable to Wikipedia). Read more about OSM at their  wiki. OSM have built up a collection of programs, databases, etc. for storing and viewing geographical data and making beautiful maps. It is very suitable for collaborative efforts of making maps, but have many benefits for single users also. Read Benefits of COMO.

As OSM, you can use COMO for making free maps but you are of course free to choose under which terms and conditions you use and distribute your map.

Do you want to contribute to COMO? Read How to contribute.

COMO is a ongoing and quite new project, I recommend to use it only for development purposes.

How to start?

To begin making maps with COMO, begin with reading the Introduction page.

What does COMO stand for?

COMO might stand for Collaborative Orienteering Mapmaking Online or Collaborative Orienteering Mapmaking with Open software.

Como is also a Spanish word that could mean "how" (cómo with apostrophe) or "as". The COMO project is about explaining how to do for (cómo hacer para) making orienteering maps with existing (or specially made) open software.

COMO components

COMO consists of a standard for how map objects should be tagged (you might think of it as a file standard), and different (already existing) programs which in some cases have additions to be able to use them for orienteering.
